Thank you Empress Chloe for these wonderful pearls of wisdom!! Be sure to check out Chloe’s website for more wonderful wizardry: https://www.extramagic.consulting 🧙‍♀️💫👑

  1. Be yourself but don’t be an oversharer! What does authenticity mean to you and how can you represent this online? This can change from campaign to campaign and is extremely individual from person to person. Fans like a bit of mystery so no need to post really personal things - keep them wanting more!

  2. Bake a bunch of assets before the bake sale! When you’re about to launch a campaign have a load of assets and content ready to go! You can prep your posts to automatically go out. There are lots of amazing apps to help with socials (Calista uses Hootsuite to prep).

  3. Come prepared to discuss ideas when working with a consultant! Have a clear vision in your head on you and your project, even if this isn’t a fully fledged plan. Start by figuring out… What do you stand for? What is your message? - keep your socials on brand.

  4. Keep your data in one place! Make a spreadsheet with all the codes and digits related to any release you ever do, even if you don’t know what those digits mean! Along with digits, this spreadsheet should also include date of release, names of writers etc…

  5. Don’t treat playlists and press pickups as the holy grail! Although chasing big playlists and press can seem important, it doesn’t always lead to long-term success and can be difficult to sustain. Break down your goals for the campaign to something more meaningful eg. ‘100 core fans on my mailing list’

Other sprinkles of advice for artists that came from the podcast were:

  • The minute social media stops being fun - stop ✋

  • Don’t let your ‘success’ on social media be a marker of life ‘success’. Don’t let ‘attention’ or ‘popularity’ on social media give you ‘validity’

  • BUILD YOUR MAILING LIST (This is more valuable for building fan relationships than social media!)

  • Sign up to royalty collection for writing and performing (PRS-PPL in the UK)

  • Get a bandcamp account!

  • Don’t call it rap, call it ‘spoken word’ lol 🙌
